Foraging for Food

On a rainy Monday April 15th the BRIGHTies gathered in Lewisham to learn about what we could find in our local woodlands to eat or drink! Our woodland guide was a wise park ranger named Theresa from ‘Wild Food Walks’. She took us on a trail through the trees and shrubbery, stopping along the way to educate us on various wild growing plants and flowers that we were able to smell, feel and taste. This included some Wild Garlic, ‘Sticky Weed’ and even Stinging Nettles, each with their own benefits for the body and mind. We were all so fascinated and enthralled that we were unable to get through too many, but how wonderful it was to know that such medicinal delights are available to forage close to our doorsteps and we even had little baggies to take some samples away. As usual our interpreters did an incredible job as well as the guides and volunteers. The weather may have not been perfect but, the rain held off and it certainly didn’t ‘dampen’ our experience. We ended the forage with a wander round the ‘Sensory Garden’ which was full in abundance of wild flowers and herbs that indulged every sense with their smells, colours and tastes. A true gem tucked away in the south east of London! Pics in the Gallery!
